I have been working on a painful 5 color print for

I have been working on a painful 5 color print for the last month or so, but most of what I’ve been up to is little work area improvements to make better use of space. I didn’t have a place for the dowels I use as furniture and last week at work I spotted a tube mailer in the recycling bin so I took it home, hacked it up, painted it, drilled some holes, and threw a lot of zip ties on it to make a thing hahah.

I don’t think I’ve really talked about my Writ

I don’t think I’ve really talked about my Write-A-Sign press before. This was my first press purchase and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing hahah. I got this off eBay and from the photos I didn’t realize the type that came with it wasn’t type high. It turned out to be rubber letters with magnet backing, but fortunately that height is close to most soft polymer linoblock thicknesses, so while it was disappointing at first it still was a good purchase.
All the pink linocut glyphs I cut during covid lockdown were for this press.
The Write-A-Sign was manufactured by the Morgan Sign Machine Company (same as Line-O-Scribe) and clearly was not not sold for as many years given how few I’ve seen online and I have yet to come across an old catalog with this in it. Anyway, figured I’d post about it in case anyone else finds one and wonders if it’s worth buying.

Saw a post by @sangha_press about finding some typ

Saw a post by @sangha_press about finding some type high children’s counting blocks and felt like having a go at them myself. Not bad for $9! But they wiggle around if you put them all in a block like I did here since they taper slightly towards the top. I couldn’t tighten the quoins much or else the pressure would pop them straight out the top and since they were so loosely in place, the tack of the ink was enough to lift the cubes out if I wasn’t careful with the brayer. If I shoved folded bits of card stock in between every cube it would have helped, but that seemed like too much work for just a test. I suspect these would be a real pain in the butt to work with on a platen press, but I have no personal experience using them so there may be a trick to making these work there. Anyway, looking forward to using these blocks more intentional ways in the future!

Equipment upgrade: flat files 🥲 I think if you follow me, you’ve realized I’m not trying to be IG famous, but documenting a slow return to printmaking. Printmaking is for everyone and does not need to be this complicated. (A styrofoam plate, a ballpoint pen, a foam craft roller, and some tempera paint is the easiest and cheapest place to start.) But I think I’m doing this for all the people with BFAs who were given a degree but no direction on how to get to a setup similar to art school without getting an MFA and staying in academia or moving to a city big enough to join a communal membership studio. It’s doable! Just slow. It’s not cheap either, but if you’re patient, you’ll find a deal here or there. I found these flat files on Craigslist at a price I could afford and within a reasonable driving distance after looking for two years hahah. But I have them now! And it’ll make accessing paper and prints so much easier than the stack of boxes and portfolios I was using.

Made a sewn book for the first time in years last week for a friend. Not so sure how I feel about rainbow thread, but it went with the speckled paper I decided to glue as cover liner on a whim. Also Yes Paste lasts forever??? I think that container is 10 years old hahah. /// Details: grey kraft cardstock lined with speckled paper, filled 40 natural colored 25% cotton pages, 5” x 8.5”.
